Medicare Made Simple

Understanding Your Options — Without the Confusion

Navigating Medicare can feel overwhelming — there are multiple parts, plans, and enrollment windows to consider.
At McMichael Benefits, our goal is to make it clear, simple, and easy to understand so you can make confident choices for your healthcare needs.

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:

‣ Individuals age 65 or older
‣ Certain younger people with disabilities
‣ People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

It’s divided into several parts, each covering different services.

The Parts of Medicare — Explained Simply

Part A — Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health services.
(Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.)

Part B — Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, preventive services, lab tests, and outpatient care.
(There’s a monthly premium for Part B based on income.)

Part C — Medicare Advantage Plans
Private insurance plans approved by Medicare that combine Parts A and B — often including prescription drug coverage, dental, vision, and hearing benefits.

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps cover the cost of prescription medications. You can get this as part of a Medicare Advantage plan or as a standalone plan.

Enrollment Periods to Know

Timing matters when it comes to Medicare enrollment:

Initial Enrollment Period: 7-month window around your 65th birthday.
General Enrollment Period: January 1 – March 31 each year (if you missed your initial period).
Open Enrollment Period: October 15 – December 7 — when you can review or switch plans.
